The J-List: Jon’s Breakdown – June 29th

Hey everyone! So this will be the first time I’ve done this, but I got the idea to write a small newsletter weekly talking about things I’ve discovered, learned, and just overall enjoyed throughout the week. Please let me know what you think and subscribe to follow along!

Interesting Discovery This Week

Much of my week has been devoted to Power Electrionics. Power electronics for my non-engineer friends, are the pieces of equipment that do all the hard labor in powering homes, cars, and factories. Texas has been in the middle of an energy crisis, and I started digging into energy rates and how grid demand is being handled. Big open bottle there, as demand keeps increasing while supply is staying constant.

What I’m Reading

The Four Hour Workweek by Tim Ferris. After listening to Tim Ferris appear on Andrew Huberman’s podcast, I decided to pick up and start to read the Four Hour Workwee by Tim. I’ve always seen Ferris as an incredibly innovating guy, and havent gotten to dive into his book. 30 pages in, I enjoy his separation from traditional methods to non-standard ideas. As I learn more and hopefully enjoy more, I’ll report back with learnings.

What I’m Watching

The Bear, Season 2. For those into cooking, fast paced dramas, and just a great overall TV series, go watch The Bear. The Bear depicts a South Side Chicago restaurant trying to keep it’s doors afloat as their Michelin Star family member comes back to the restaurant, and depicts the struggle the restaurant.

Being from Chicago suburbs, the scenes in the city fill my heart with joy. The Italian Beef makes my taste buds crave that savory, spicy taste of home while the production just keeps me on edge. I think the show overall is spectacular, and recommend anyone to watch. Let me know what you think.

Good Purchase Of The Week

I just bought the Insta360 Go 3. This action camera within 24 hours of purchasing has already recorded over an hour of footage. I love the thought that went into the design, and the streaming quality is remarkable. I climb mountains as a hobby, so I’m eager to implement this in my next hiking/climb. The YouTube page will likely see a vlog or so in the future. Eager to put it out.

What Inspired Me This Week

This week, I learned of Seth Godin via the Tim Ferris Podcast. Seth has double digit #1 Best Selling books on Marketing and Storytelling. On the show he said something that really made me think. It was along these lines – The best part of life that traditionalist’s don’t agree with, is careers can change. If you went to school to be an engineer, you can end up a writer. If you were a financial analysist, you can end up a nurse. – Being an engineer, and always strong with numbers, enginnering and math made sense. Never did I think I’d spend most of my time outside work writing music, making videos, and writing blog posts. What can I say? Balance is sexy. I don’t know where I’ll be in five years. All I know, is that it’s cool wherever it may be.

Thought Of The Week

While at a bachelor party at a sandbar past weekend, my friends wanted to hang around with other boats, however it took a little bit of time before anyone approached a stranger. It got my brain thinking about core memories with strangers. Typically the stories you make when you don’t know someone follow one of two trends:

1) You have a lifelong memory about an event that happened that night or 2) It is genericized and said: yeah we made friends with this group of (insert group here))

  1. You have a lifelong memory about an event that happened that night OR
  2. It is genericized and said: yeah we made friends with this group of (insert group here))

In either situation, nobody remebers who started the first interaction. Individually, most are afraid to walk up to a random person due to fear of embarassment. However, in any regard, no one will remember that interaction. Overall thought being, why be afraid, as no one will likely rember the interaction?

Welcome to the J-List,

Jon
