The 1%

As I sit at my desk this Wednesday night, I think about what it takes to be great, and ultimately what that even means.

When the world’s greats are thought of, across any domain, you see a person who has done the same thing consistently for years and years of their life. Every single person started from somewhere, and they likely sucked at what they did. This whole commit to the bit mentality that I’ve been taking on this year has started to really show me how important it is to be consistent, even when there’s no payoff. I posted a video five days ago, right now is has 30 views. Near nobody has seen it, yet, I know that I have a message to share, and will stay consistent around it. I will help people unleash their inner creativity if its the last thing I do!

Apart from my YouTube journey, it’s made me think about all other domains in which perserverence really thrive, apart from business. Some that come to mind for my specific applicability

  • Getting 6 Pack abs. I saw a statistic that said having a six pack is less common than being a millionaire. 2% of humans have a 6 pack, while 8% are millionaires. Something that eating and exercising consistently can build.
  • Instrumental Talent. Those who solo the best, perform the best, and write the best usually simply have more hours on their specific instrument. They often don’t play multiple often, rather focus on a specifc domain. Same goes for producers. I read something a few years back about John Mayer and how he wouldn’t go out on weekends. His introverted self just played guitar in his room, now he’s one of the best of all time in my eyes.
  • Coding and Software. Within software there are so many different skillsets. Websites, algorithms, front-end, back-end, control systesm, machine learning, you name it. The top 1% have honed their skills down to a specific language and specific domain of focus.
  • Chess Grandmasters. Because I love chess I have to throw this in here. Chess is dominated by roughly 10 SUPER Grandmasters, who obliterate literally every other grand master in their path with Magnus Carlsen leading that charge. Hikaru has been giving him a run for his money recently, so thats been fun to watch. Magnus started playing chess when he was 5, hes now 32. 27 years of perfecting a craft. Its incredible what focused talent can do

I’ve always been a generalist my whole life. I play 8 instruments, I’ve played most sports, I try most hobbies, and I love that about myself. However, this year, I want to keep focusing. Focus my passion into my outside work, and commit to that bit.

Happy Wednesday, everyone.

Commit.
