Taqueria El Kalifa

El Califa

Taqueria El Califa is a really awesome spot and the Al Pastor is out of this world. What’s cool about the Al Pastor here in Mexico, is that it’s rotating on an open spit, kinda like how Gyro meat would be in Greece. My native friend told me his biggest quarrel with tacos in the States is the fact Pastor is just pork on a grill. After having these, I can see his point.

The Pastor just melts in your mouth. The tacos are topped with cilantro, onion, and a small slice of pineapple, all for $19MX. That’s $1US. WHAT! Served with the tacos are four salsas, and if you ask the server for “Salsa Especial,” he will bring out this extra spicy salsa that was delicious. Be warned though, I have a rather high spice tolerance, and this wasn’t a salsa to joke around about.

Along with the Al Pastor, we had some guacamole and some bistec/campechanos tacos. These were different from what I was used to. Imagine a really thin fillet topped with a very crunchy topping. Wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t my cup of tea either. The guac though, wow. Lets just say I’ll be more than happy getting to eat avocados this fresh for the next long while. Needless to say, I have been back to El Califa multiple times, and it’s a great joint. Quick, Easy, and Solid. Not bad for finding tacos within thirty minutes of landing in the city!

Probably like these things so much because they hit my Greek Roots Hard
